For elephants, the gestation period is between 18 to 22 months and the female can only give birth to one baby at a time. And, so, when the young elephant is born, it weighs about 100 kilos.The elephant calf soon becomes autonomous and learns to follow its mother quickly. It feeds from its mother for the first 2 years, until it begins to eat vegetation. While the female elephants spend their lives with their origin family, males may leave their group after they reach 10 years of age.
