Legend says that years ago, in the village of Taranto, the townsfolk contracted a strange illness, tarantism, caused by the venomous bite of the tarantula. To fight it, the whole village danced the tarantella, to eradicate the venom.
The truth is that the bite of the tarantula is not dangerous to humans and it's unknown whether this ailment actually exists.
The tarantula is a spider that got its name from the village of Tarente in Italy. Part of the wolf spider family and originating in the south of Europe. The tarantula’s body can reach 3cm long.
